What is an SD card
A Secure Digital(SD) card is a non volatile memory card used extensively today. It is for use in portable devices. The SD card has a very compact design and measures 24mm x 32mm x 2.1m while weighing approximately 2 grams. Such small size and light weight ensures easy handling of the SD card. SD cards are typically designed to have memory stored in a very small size device. SD cards come in different ranges and have a storage capacity that varies from 1 MB to 2 GB. This provides a large storage capacity that is easily portable and transferable to other devices. The initial SD cards were designed by Toshiba, Matsushita and Sandisk.
SD cards are extensively used in modern daily used technologies which includes digital cameras, mobile phones, PDA’s, media players, electronic devices, car navigation systems, video games and computers. SD cards were basically designed to be a competitor of memory sticks but they are more open in comparison.
The transfer via a SD card is very smooth and with fast rates. The basic cards transfer data at a rate of 900 KB/s which is six times faster than the transfer rate of a CD-ROM. All SD cards have a minimum and maximum read and write speed. The read and the write speed for the SD card can vary with the read speed being usually higher.
Speed class ratings for the SD card are defined by the SD card association. Speed class ratings are the minimum write speed for different SD cards. There are 3 different classes with different speed class rating depending on the SD card. The three speed class ratings include: 2 MB/s; 4 MB/s and 6 MB/s. SD cards are formulated of small memory units. The data is stored in units with no data. This fragmentation enables a reduction in the write speed.
The evolution of SD card has greatly enabled media to be bridged by the easy transfer it provides. SD cards deliver high performance and allow consumers to capture the data quickly. SD cards have a built in FAT or FAT32 file system. This allows the card to be accessed on any device with a SD card reader, allowing the data to be in an easy to use format.
SD cards come under the name of various trademarks. SD cards are also extremely reliable and durable. Usually, SD cards have a life time guarantee with only a few exceptions. SD cards cannot be accessed through thin mmc slot as it is a bit thicker than memory cards. Some SD cards also feature the write protection which prevents the loss or erasure of valuable data accidentally.
